Sep 10, 2009 · I bought a used Craftman riding mower with a Kohler Command vertical shaft engine, about 20hp. The engine races out of control and the throttle has no effect on teh engine speed. I can manually bring it to idle by sliding the governor linkage that is located below the carb.

Jun 9, 2007 · I have a JD 316 lawn tractor with a Kohler K341 engine that I'm rebuilding. The plastic governor gear sits on a short steel shaft in the crankcase. A long stop screw / pin is supposed to keep the governor on the shaft.

Feb 8, 2010 · I haven't seen a governor failure in the courage engines yet. I've seen a few fail in the older commands. Usually it just falls off the pin and into the sump. Post back with what you find, I'd be interested to know. So far the courages seem to be decent engines.

Jul 19, 2006 · If your linkages are intact, and the governor arm is not loose or able to slip on the governor shaft, then the governor came apart inside the engine. Don't run it this way. You'll ahve to take the engine oil pan (sump cover) off to see and repair the problem.

I think the problem is with the breaker points. On this model, the points are mounted on the side of the governor, which sits on top of the engine.

Apr 23, 2009 · You might try spinning the engine over about ten times with the spark plug out and the throttle at full open. That will get rid of the gas in the combustion chamber and may get you going. Another possibility is a sheared flywheel key that is causing a problem with ignition timing.

Jul 27, 2006 · The engine runs fine for a while, but the pump slowly loses volume, and after a while, the pump can't pump gas as fast as the engine consumes it. You can usually look at the fuel filter and see when this is happening.

Apr 17, 2018 · Engine starts fine and does not backfire. It does not surge under load however at no load it does. Also as it is surging from low speed to high, it sounds like someone is hitting the engine with a hammer (a knock).

Oct 31, 2009 · A dirty carburetor most often causes surging. It could be governor related but I would go for the carburetor. You could add a product called Sea Foam to the gas and it may clean up the carburetor and stop the surging. Cleaning the carburetor is the best method to correct surging and the manual shows how. Apr 27, 2013 · It is a John Deere STX38 with a Kohler CV13 Engine. I can not get it to idle below 2200 rpm. I have adjusted the idle speed screw and idle mixture screw with no luck. I have also adjusted the governor (static) per the repair manual. There is some play in the throttle shaft but not that much IMO.

May 7, 2004 · It is difficult to tell by your description whether you have a power (lack of) or governor problem. Since it appears you have covered all bases regarding the governor, you may well have power issues, particularly within the engine. I recommend removing the muffler to inspect the exhaust port as well as the piston & cylinder.
