The black keys of the piano are arranged in groups of twos and threes. Using these black key groups you can identify any note on the keyboard. For example, C is always the white key immediately to the left of a two black key group, and A is always between the second and third black key in a three black key group.

So let’s quickly sum up what we’ve learned about identifying notes on a piano: Zone 1 has 3 white keys, C, D, and E. C is on the left side, D is in the middle, E on the right. Zone 2 has 4 white keys, F, G, A, and B. F is on the left side, B is on the right, and G and A are in the middle, with G to the left, and A to the right.

The tones that you write in musical notation, are called natural notes The names of the natural notes are A, B, C, D, E, F and G. note is a written tone, a note is a tone written down in musical notation. In order to discuss specific notes, or pitches, we will use American Standard Pitch Notation, abbreviated ASPN. ASPN designates specific musical pitches by combining a note name (such as C) with a subscript octave designation (such as 4), creating a bipartite label (for example, C 4).

In Western music, we can distinguish 12 different notes. Every song or piece of music is made of only those 12 different notes. The easiest way to show the 12 notes is on a piano keyboard.
