A jump ball violation occurs when a player participating in the jump ball commits an infraction, such as tapping the ball before it reaches its peak or stepping out of the jumping circle before the ball is touched. These violations can result in the other team gaining possession or a re-toss by the referee.

During a jump ball, if a player leaves the ground before the referee releases the ball, makes contact with the opponent, or fails to comply with other specified rules, a jump ball violation is called. In this occurrence, the opposing team gets possession of the ball.
