Some women's leagues are professional, while others are semi-professional. Only a few professional women's leagues pay their players, such as the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), and Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), all of which exist in the United States.

A new women's professional basketball league is set to launch in January 2022 and will include 44 players competing on four different teams over two months. There will be no owners or GMs.
