Art Nouveau was founded by Siegfried Bing, a French-German art dealer who launched his Maison de l’Art Nouveau, “House of the New Art,” in Paris in 1895, popularizing the term. James Ensor and Théo van Rysselberghe were among the movement’s founding members. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a French Post-Impressionist artist, is also credited for helping to define the Art Nouveau style.
