Another option is to install a canopy or other physical shade structure over a portion of the pool. You can also set up patio umbrellas on the sunny side of the pool to help shade the water.

Some solid covers are called “solar covers.” They are coated or made with material that will transfer heat from sunlight into the pool water below. This helps keep the water above the freezing point. There are also leaf covers that can be used over the top of a solid cover. These catch the debris, making it easier for you to remove it.
