The Ruger Single Six was inspired by the popularity of TV and movie Westerns in the 1950s. Given Colt discontinuing the SAA, the revolver gained a foothold. Originally the.22 LR had a 5 1/2-inch barrel, and 4 5/8, 6½ and 9½-inch models were later added.

Ruger answered the demand in 1953 with the Ruger Single-Six. Chambered in.22 LR, it wore all the attractive looks of a Colt Single Action, but—thanks to investment casting—didn’t put as much strain on the family budget. The attention to detail and rugged construction made it a huge success, with orders doubling from 1954 to 1955.

The Single-Six is currently produced as the New Model Single-Six. The term "New Model" simply means that this model includes Ruger's transfer bar mechanism for increased safety, allowing one to carry the revolver safely with all six chambers loaded.

With the simple change of a cylinder, the Ruger Single Six revolver transforms from a 22 LR to a 22 WMR and features windage and elevation adjustable rear sights, a precisely rifled cold hammer-forged barrel, as well as a transfer bar mechanism and loading gate interlock that aids in preventing accidental discharge.
