  1. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory.

    Eilean Donan Castle was opened to the public by John Macrae in 1955. In 1983 the MacRae family formed the Conchra Trust to care for the castle. The rooms within the castle are packed with information on the history of the site. There is also an extensive collection of items that once belonged to the different occupants of the castle.

    The look of the present structure was also confirmed by old plans of the castle preserved with other records in Edinburgh Castle. Eilean Donan Castle is now owned by the Conchra Charitable Trust and is maintained for the public at large.
