The multiplication sign (×), also known as the times sign or the dimension sign, is a mathematical symbol used to denote the operation of multiplication, which results in a product. While similar to a lowercase X (x), the form is properly a four-fold rotationally symmetric saltire.

× (multiplication sign) 1. In elementary arithmetic, denotes multiplication, and is read as times; for example, 3 × 2. 2. In geometry and linear algebra, denotes the cross product. 3. The Latin small letter x is used to represent a variable or coefficient. In algebra, x is often used to represent an unknown value. The symbol x is also used to represent the horizontal dimension in the 2D cartesian coordinate system.
