According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), handicap accessible shower doors must have a minimum unobstructed width of 32 inches. However, many accessible shower designs feature doors that are larger than this minimum width, such as 36 inches or more, to ensure that they can accommodate a full-wheelchair user comfortably.

At the most basic level the person in a wheelchair needs to be able to fit through the bathroom door. This may require increasing the opening to be 36” wide (if your space will accommodate this home modification). It may also be helpful to change the swing on the door to open outwards or to use a pocket door.
