    The USS Constellation is a sloop-of-war, the last sail-only warship designed and built by the United States Navy. She was built in 1854, using a small amount of material salvaged from the frigate USS Constellation, which had been disassembled the year before. The ship served during the mid-19th century and took part in the Civil War against the South. Before the Civil War, Constellation served as flagship of the U.S. Africa Squadron patrolling the waters off of West Africa in search of ships engaging in the illegal slave trade. She captured three slavers, including the barque Cora, and freed 705 Africans destined for slavery.
