When adding the “-ing”, we have to follow special spelling rules. The general rule is to add -ing to the verb. For example, for verbs like wait, visit, speak, add only -ing (i.e., wait ing; visit ing, speak ing.) When a verb ends in a silent e, we drop the e and add -ing.

While using the verb '-ing' form, keep these general rules in mind: If the verb ends in 'e', drop the 'e' and add '-ing'. For example, "drive" becomes "driving". If the verb is a single syllable word ending in consonant-vowel-consonant, double the last consonant and add '-ing'.

Adding 'ing' to a verb changes the meaning and the function of a verb. The general rule is to simply add 'ing' to the base verb, i.e. talk becomes talking and sing becomes singing. If the verb ends in an 'e', you simply need to remove it. For instance, dance becomes dancing.

The general rule when changing a verb into its -ing form is just to add -ing to the end of the verb. Verbs that end in a silent “e”, remove the -e and add -ing. Verbs that end with a long -e sound, add -ing. Verbs that end in “ie”, change -ie to -y and add -ing.
