The type chart is a visual representation of type effectiveness in the core series Pokémon games. The type chart has changed between generations of games, most notably due to the inclusion of new types. This matchup table is used in Generation VI onward. The Dark and Steel types were introduced. Bug was made ½× against Poison instead of 2×.

In Pokémon GO, icons were introduced to represent each of the types during gameplay. Very similar icons were later adopted into the core series, starting with Pokémon Sun and Moon and then following up with the subsequent core series games and Pokémon HOME. Some alternate icons associated with types appeared before.

All Pokémon creatures and their moves are assigned certain types. Each type has several strengths and weaknesses in both attack and defense. In battle, you should use Pokémon and moves that have a type advantage over your opponent; doing so will cause much more damage than normal.

Most Gym Leaders and members of the Elite Four are designed to have a type-specific theme. If the type of a move used by a Pokémon is strong against the opponent's type, then the damage done is twice the normal amount. However, if a move's type is not very effective against the opponent's type, the damage done is half the normal amount.
