A good 1-tech ensures that the 3-tech gets a one-on-one matchup. Whether they’re a true 1-tech or a 0, they have generally same role. In an even front (four defensive linemen), the defense is playing with four defensive linemen vs. five offensive linemen.

We align with the lead foot on the board. The first step is a short six-inch step. That is why we use the narrow board to keep them from overstepping with the first step. On the command, the lineman moves the foot against the board, steps over the board, and drives out of the chute.

Fundamentals may be more important for offensive linemen than any other position on the field. Knowledge and consistent practice of these techniques can yield great results, even against superior athletes.

1-Technique (4-3 NT) – Pat Williams. The 1-technique does much the same as the 0-technique, except he is shaded over the inside shoulder of one of the guards, and is rarely expected to control two gaps. He is, however, expected to command a double team from the center and guard, which frees up other linemen to be one on one with their blockers.
