The Jacobi symbol is a generalization of the Legendre symbol. It is defined as the product of the Legendre symbols for an integer a and a positive odd integer n with prime factorization. The Jacobi symbol shares many of the properties of the Legendre symbol, and can be used to simplify computations involving quadratic residues. When n is an odd prime, the Jacobi symbol is equal to the Legendre symbol.
