In American football, a power run is a running play used out of a variety of offensive formations using two backs (fullback, tailback). A power run uses two lead blockers: the fullback and the backside offensive guard. A typical blocking scheme for a power run is for the linemen to down block the man in their inside gap.

Power is a gap scheme run that creates movement with double teams at the point of attack while wrapping a lineman to the play-side to create a numbers advantage. Power Philosophy The power scheme uses the backside guard to pull and either kick out the end man on the line of scrimmage or wrap through and onto the second level.

Power is a play that’s often run by both spread and power schemes. It’s a play that puts the defense at a disadvantage if appropriately blocked. The front side of the offensive line will run what we call a gap scheme and the backside hinge, along with a puller leading up through the front side.
