Crotchet Rest The crochet rest has a relative length of a quarter note and a value of 1 beat, the same as the crochet note. This rest looks quite different to the previous two, looking similar to a wobbly lightning bolt as opposed to a rectangle. It's placed in the middle of the stave.

Music does not consist only of sounds: it includes silences too. Notation has to show how long each silence lasts, just as it shows how long sounds lasts. The signs used for silences are called rests. A silence lasting as long as a crotchet is indicated by a crotchet rest.

Rests are intervals of silence in pieces of music, marked by symbols indicating the length of the silence. Each rest symbol and name corresponds with a particular note value, indicating how long the silence should last, generally as a multiplier of a measure or whole note. The quarter (crotchet) rest (𝄽) may take a different form in older music.
