Supervision in counselling is when a professional counsellor uses the services of another counsellor or psychotherapist to review the way they work with their clients.

Supervision is a formal process in which a qualified or trainee psychotherapist or psychotherapeutic counsellor regularly presents their client work to a designated or chosen supervisor as way of enhancing their practice through careful reflection.

Working under supervision (see “ Clinical Supervision, Training and Development ”) means that a counsellor or psychotherapist uses the services of another counsellor or psychotherapist to review their work with clients, their professional development, and often their personal development as well.

Through supervision, counsellors can reflect on their practice, receive feedback, and identify areas for improvement. It helps counsellors refine their skills, gain new perspectives, and stay updated with best practices and ethical guidelines.
