Having been inspired by the story of François Bonivard after a visit to the castle, Lord Byron wrote a poem entitled The Prisoner of Chillon in 1816 about François. Byron supposedly carved his name on a pillar of the dungeon The French artist Eugène Delacroix drew inspiration from Byron's poem for his painting The Prisoner of Chillon which was exhibited at the Salon of 1835.
