A crypt is a burial chamber that holds the casketed body of the deceased. It can be above ground in a mausoleum or below ground in a lawn crypt. Modern-day crypts for the average person are usually located in public mausoleums. Costs are similar to in-ground burial but the casket stays in a clean and dry environment.

A lawn crypt may hold the casketed remains of several individuals, side-by-side within a section of a cemetery and/or above and below others. Often times the individuals interred together in a lawn crypt are family, but this is by no means a rule.

The mausoleum crypt is the chamber within the mausoleum that holds the burial remains. In some cases, these may be cremation urns instead of or as well as caskets. The size of the crypt determines the number of individuals that can be interred in the mausoleum.
