We use between to refer to two things which are clearly separated. We use among to talk about things which are not clearly separated because they are part of a group or crowd or mass of objects: Our holiday house is between the mountains and the sea. (the mountains are on one side and the sea is on the other)

While between is used when there is something in the middle of two objects, among is used to mean something which is a part of a group. I divided the cold drink between the two kids, but not among others. She was among the dancer’s group, who called me to meet between 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Use between when you want to refer to two or more entities that are separate and distinct. Use among when referring to things that aren’t distinct or individual, but instead collective. ○ The students chose between Howard, Spelman, and Morehouse. ○ The students chose among the top HBCUs. Between and among are prepositions.

The traditional rule regarding these two words states that between introduces two items while among introduces more than two items. The race is now between Jenny and Jill. The funds were divided among Steve, Carter, and Smitty.
