Euclid's Algorithm is an efficient method for computing the greatest common divisor (GCD) of two integers, which is the largest number that divides both of them without leaving a remainder. This algorithm is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid, who first described it in his work "Elements" around 300 BC1.
Basic Euclidean Algorithm
The basic Euclidean algorithm is based on the principle that the GCD of two numbers does not change if the larger number is replaced by its remainder when divided by the smaller number. The steps are as follows:
Divide the larger number by the smaller number.
Replace the larger number with the smaller number and the smaller number with the remainder from step 1.
Repeat the process until the remainder is zero. The last non-zero remainder is the GCD of the original two numbers1.
Example
To find the GCD of 1071 and 462:
1071 ÷ 462 = 2 remainder 147
462 ÷ 147 = 3 remainder 21
147 ÷ 21 = 7 remainder 0
The GCD is 21.
Euclidean algorithms (Basic and Extended) - GeeksforGeeks
The algorithm is based on the below facts. 1. If we subtract a smaller number from a larger one (we reduce a larger number), GCD doesn’t change. So if we keep subtracting repeatedly the larger of two, we end up with GCD. 2. Now instead of subtraction, if we divide the larger number, the algorithm stops … See more
