An outlier is a data point that significantly deviates from other observations in a dataset. Outliers can arise due to variability in the measurement, novel data, or experimental errors12. They can provide valuable insights into the data but can also cause issues in statistical analyses and machine learning models3.
Identifying Outliers
Outliers can be identified using various methods. One common approach is the Interquartile Range (IQR) method. The IQR is the range between the first quartile (Q1) and the third quartile (Q3) of the data. Outliers are defined as data points that fall below Q1 - 1.5IQR or above Q3 + 1.5IQR1.
Example Calculation
Consider the dataset: 2, 4, 5, 5, 6, 11, 11, 13, 14, 25, 30.
