How does a "stack overflow" occur and how do you prevent it?
Stack overflow occurs when your program uses up the entire stack. The most common way this happens is when your program has a recursive function which calls itself forever. Every new call to the recursive function takes more stack until eventually your program uses up the entire stack.

On Windows a stack overflow exception will be generated. The following windows code illustrates this: CONTEXT context; // we are interested control registers. context.ContextFlags = CONTEXT_CONTROL; // get the details. Sep 7, 2016 · The basic idea is to fill the stacks with a known bit fashion, aka, painting the stack, and then have code that monitors how much of that stack is being consumed by determining how much of the stack no longer contains the known bit pattern.
Avoiding Stack Overflows: Application Monitoring the Stack Usage
Feb 19, 2023 · How to avoid stack overflows in embedded applications? There are several ways, and a simple one is writing a defined pattern on the stack and then monitor how much of that has been overwritten. This article explains how to do this on ARM Cortex-M.
How to check for Stack overflow in an embedded application?
You can check the value of the variable in the main loop to see after-the-fact that the stack has overflowed. Or if your debugger allows, set a breakpoint when that variable is written. It should be written only when it is initialized.

Stack Canaries with GCC: Checking for Stack Overflow at Runtime
Sep 28, 2019 · In this article I describe an approach with the GNU gcc in a bare-metal (no RTOS) environment, because FreeRTOS already includes an option to check for a stack overflow at runtime: the check is performed at task context switch, see “FreeRTOS – stacks and stack overflow” for more details.
Detecting stack overflows during runtime beforehand
Feb 5, 2016 · If you get such a signal and determine that it comes from a stack overflow, raise the soft stack limit with setrlimit and set a global variable to identify that this occured. Make the variable volatile so the optimizer doesn't foil your plains.
