Unix is a multiuser, multitasking operating system that has had a significant impact on the development of modern computing. Its history dates back to the mid-1960s when Bell Labs, MIT, and General Electric were working on an experimental time-sharing operating system called Multics1. However, due to the complexity and size of Multics, Bell Labs withdrew from the project. Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others at Bell Labs decided to create a simpler system, which eventually became Unix1.
