    Nuremberg began life circa 1040. Heinrich III built a fortress on the rocky outcrop on the edge of the current city. The first districts of the town were St. Sebaldus and St. Lorenz. The Jewish Quarter was then around Hauptplatz. The city walls were built in the 14th century. In 1356, Emperor Charles IV decreed Nuremberg a free imperial city.
