Google announced today it will be applying AI advancements, including a new technology called to improve Google Search. At the company’s event, the company demonstrated new features, including those that leverage MUM, to better connect web searchers to the content they’re looking for, while also making web search feel more natural and intuitive.

Google is calling the new AI operated search engine “Search Generative Experience” or SGE. By giving AI the ability to generate longer, more detailed responses to questions, it will synthesize information found across the internet — essentially saving the user time and energy with several different searches.

Instead of asking you to click on links, Google, like ChatGPT, uses a generative AI engine that summarizes information from multiple sources automatically. This upends the traditional Google search experience, one requiring that you use keywords and make visits to multiple sites to gather information and formulate an answer in your head.

Google is utilizing AI to improve its search features, including the popular Google Lens and the new multisearch feature. With the new updates, users will be able to search using both images and text simultaneously, as well as search directly from their mobile screens with Google Lens.

At I/O 2023, the search engine giant announced that Google Search is also gaining AI capabilities that will help users search more efficiently, comprehend complex topics quicker, and learn various insights. Google has dubbed these new capabilities as Search Generative Experience – or SGE for short.
