  1. On this day 20 years ago, the iconic Italian cyclist Gino Bartali died of a heart attack. Nearly 80 years ago, the three-time Giro d'Italia and two-time Tour de France champion, too, found himself with time on his hands after cycling's biggest events were interrupted by World War Two.

    Bartali married in 1940 and was the father of three children. He died in 2000 at the age of 85 after suffering a heart attack following a heart bypass operation. He had received the last rites 10 days prior.
