- Major League Baseball's rules stated that that a bat could have no more than 18 inches of pine tar. Home plate umpire Tim McClelland took a look and, along with his fellow umpires, decided that the bat was illegal and called Brett out, nullifying the go-ahead homer. It was the third out of the inning, ending the game – a 4-3 Yankees win.
