  1. To install a forward assist, you can follow these steps12:
    1. Insert the pin from the bottom of the receiver. Look at the pin, one side is always larger, use the small end.
    2. Oil the hole and use a starter punch to get it started. Leave the starter punch on.
    3. Insert your forward assist and push it in to about where it should be. Hold it there while holding your starter punch.
    4. Give it a few taps with a brass hammer until you feel the forward assist being held by the pin.
    5. Drive it in about half way with the starter punch, and move to a cup tip punch to drive it almost all the way in.
    6. Move to a smaller cup tip punch to get it about 1/32" below the surface.
    7. Place the return spring over the pawl and inside the plunger cap.
    8. Orient the forward assist and insert it into the receiver.
    9. Press the plunger against the spring while tapping the pin into place.
