  1. Based on the diameter and velocity of impulse conduction, the nerve fibers are also classified into A, B and C types. And A is further divided in to A alpha, A beta, A gamma and A delta fibers. This classification is known as Erlanger and Gasser classification. Diameter and conduction velocity have direction relationship.

During the 1920s Joseph Erlanger and Herbert Gasser studied the properties and distribution of nerve fibers. They divided nerve fibers into two different types with different thicknesses and showed that the thicker fibers convey nerve impulses faster.
