Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is a rare congenital heart malformation of one or more of the aortic sinuses, consisting of a dilation that when unruptured is usually asymptomatic but when ruptured presents with progressive exertional dyspnea, fatigue, chest pain and that can lead to congestive heart failure if left untreated.

If unruptured, sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (commonly abbreviated SVA or SOVA) is usually asymptomatic and typically goes undetected until symptoms appear or medical imaging is performed for other reasons. If symptoms do occur, the most common are shortness of breath, palpitations, myocardial ischemia, and syncope.

Small defects may not cause symptoms, but can be diagnosed by the presence of a prominent continuous murmur. Larger defects may cause symptoms of shortness of breath and volume overload of the heart.

Asymptomatic: Small sinus of Valsalva aneurysms may be asymptomatic and incidentally discovered during routine medical examinations or imaging studies. Symptomatic: Larger aneurysms or those that cause complications may present with symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or heart murmurs.
