Toni Kroos has officially retired from professional football, following Germany’s exit from Euro 2024 at the hands of Spain. The 34-year-old had hopes to end his career by leading his side to a fourth European Championships title, but it was not to be.

Toni Kroos has officially retired from football after Germany's Euro 2024 campaign came to an end with a 2-1 defeat after extra-time to Spain in the quarter-finals. The hosts of the summer tournament were dumped out after 120 minutes of their quarter-final in Stuttgart.

The 34-year-old midfielder had been offered the chance to sign a new one-year contract at the Santiago Bernabeu but instead shocked the world by announcing his retirement, with Kroos set to hang up his boots after Euro 2024.

Kroos was also part of the Germany team which won the World Cup in 2014. He quit international football in July 2021 but came out of retirement in February after talks with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

"My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level." Kroos actually retired from international duty in 2020 following a 2-0 defeat to England in that summer's Euros, but after four years out of the fold, he announced he would return in early 2024 after being approached by Julian Nagelsmann.
