Working in Shutter Priority or Manual mode is best for cycling photography. Fast shutter speeds freeze a cyclist in action. A shutter speed exceeding 1/1000 s (seconds) may be necessary to capture a sharp image. A fast lens with a wide aperture is ideal, especially for capturing low-light action.

A shutter speed of at least 1/1000th of a second is recommended, and a narrower aperture (higher f-stop number) will help to increase the depth of field and keep the cyclists in focus.

The ideal shutter speed for this type of photography typically falls between 1/500 to 1/2000 seconds. If I want to capture sharp images of cyclists in motion, I always use a faster shutter speed. Because it allows me to freeze motion and prevent blur.

Shutter speed matters most when shooting handheld in low light, when capturing moving subjects, or when the camera is moving (as in, while you’re riding a bike!). To freeze fast-moving subjects, use a shutter speed of at least 1/500th of a second (often represented by 500 on a manual dial).
