A curtain rod in most standard homes should be placed just above the window frame. By giving about 4 to 8 inches of space between the rod and the window frame you have the optimal amount of room for hanging the rod, as well as insulation for the windows. Based on the size of the windows and the height of the ceilings, this could vary slightly.

DON’T position your curtain rod directly above the window frame. Hanging your curtain rod just above the window frame brings the eyes down, making your ceiling look and feel shorter. DO position your curtain rod directly below the ceiling. For standard 8 ft ceilings, position the rod approx 3-5 inches below the ceiling or crown moulding.

Wall-mounted rods are usually installed 4 inches above the window. To find your ideal placement, measure down from the ceiling to the top of the trim at the left corner of your window; mark the midway point. Repeat this in the middle of your window frame and in the right corner, then check your markings with a level.
