  1. Conrad III was a German king from 1138 to 1152, the first king of the Hohenstaufen family1. He was appointed duke of Franconia by his uncle, Emperor Henry V, in 11151. From 1127 to 1135, he was anti-king of his predecessor Lothair III2. Conrad was never crowned by the pope, and therefore was not confirmed as Holy Roman emperor3. His ambitions for the imperial crown and against Roger II of Sicily were thwarted by Guelph and by Henry the Lion3. Conrad was succeeded by his nephew, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I3.
