Dancesport, also known as competitive ballroom dancing, is a style of partner dancing performed and judged in various competitions worldwide. It combines elements of traditional ballroom dance styles, such as Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep, with Latin American dance styles like Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive.

Ballroom dance competitions are events where dancers compete against each other in a ballroom dance style such as Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha-cha-cha, Samba, and Jive. Competitions are danced by couples (danced with a partner) and can be amateur or professional.

Ballroom dancing is a competitive sport with specific rules, structures, and judging criteria, but despite that, it can also be a ton of fun! A typical ballroom competition consists of events in various dance styles, age groups, and skill levels. It also involves audience participation, both in dancing as well as in cheering on the competitors.

Competitive ballroom dancing has 7 main styles of competition. International Standard, International Latin, Cabaret, and Showdance are competed around the world. In America, Dancesport has added American Smooth, American Rhythm, and Theatre Arts. Though danced mostly in America, Smooth and Rhythm are becoming increasingly popular around the world.

Competitions, sometimes referred to as dancesport, range from world championships, regulated by the World Dance Council (WDC), to less advanced dancers at various proficiency levels. Most competitions are divided into professional and amateur, though in the USA pro-am competitions typically accompany professional competitions.
