    Causes

    Verified Expert

    • The causes include:
    • The condition is caused due to a chromosomal aberration called translocation which leads to the formation of what is called a "Philadelphia chromosome". This contains an abnormal fusion gene which allows the proliferation of defective white blood cells leading to cancer.
    • Possible triggers of the chromosomal aberration leading to mutation include:
    • Exposure to radiation
    • Exposure to chemicals such as benzene
    • Working in risk occupations such as agricultural work and plastic manufacturing
    • The condition is seen more often in males and the elderly (mean age at diagnosis is over 60)

    Symptoms

    Verified Expert
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms.

This condition only shows symptoms in the later stages and symptoms vary depending on the stage of CML

Symptoms during chronic and accelerated stages include:

    • Tiredness
    • Loss of appetite
    • Weight Loss
    • Anemia
    • Increased sweating
    • Abnormal bruising
    • Bone pain
    • Headache and visual disturbances
    • Night sweats
    • Tenderness and swelling on the left side of your abdomen due to spleen enlargement
    • Tenderness over the lower sternum

Symptoms at advanced stage (blastic phase) include:

    • Repeated infections in a short span of time
    • Unusually pale skin due to lack of red blood cells
    • Bleeding such as nose Bleeding and Bleeding gums
    • Easily bruised skin
    • Swollen lymph nodes
    • Itchy skin

    Treatment

    Verified Expert

Treatment is done by a team of different healthcare specialists since it is a complex condition. Treatment is based on age, extent of the spread of cancer and possible side effects.

    Medication

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors: Are targeted therapy drugs that work to destroy cells containing the abnormal fusion gene.

    Imatinib . Nilotinib . Dasatinib

Antibiotics: Given to prevent infections because CML patients have increased vulnerability.

    Penicillin . Cephalexin

Proteins: May help in reducing growth of leukemia cells.

    Interferons

    Diagnosis

    Verified Expert
One or more of these tests may be recommended by your medical provider.
Laboratory tests are performed following a physical exam.

    Common tests & procedures

Blood test: To check for abnormalities in number and shape/size of different types of white blood cells.

CT scan: To check if the other organs are affected.

Bone marrow biopsy: Used to confirm diagnosis and is carried under a local anesthetic. A sample is taken from the hip bone to check for the presence of any cancerous cells.

Cytogenetic analysis: Methods such as FISH are used to look for chromosomal abnormalities and identify the Philadelphia chromosome.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR): Genetic testing methods such as PCR are used to identify the abnormal fusion gene.

  1. Chronic myeloid leukemia
    • According to 3 sources
Chronic myeloid leukemia or CML is a type of cancer that starts from cells in the bone marrow that are supposed to grow into different types of blood cells. Most of the time CML grows slowly, but over time the leukemia cells can spill out into the blood and spread to other parts of the body, like the spleen.
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is also called chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic granulocytic leukemia and chronic myelocytic leukemia. CML is one of four main types of leukemia. Hematologists and oncologists are specialists who treat people who have CML or other types of blood cancer. Most CML patients are treated with daily oral drug therapy.
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of chronic leukemia. "Chronic" means that the leukemia usually gets worse slowly. In CML, the bone marrow makes abnormal granulocytes (a type of white blood cell). These abnormal cells are also called blasts.
