  1. The following is a history of the Charles River: The Charles River was formed towards the end of the Pleistocene epoch, the Ice Age, which occurred about 2,580,000 to 11,700 years ago. At the beginning of the Ice Age, the Charles River did not exist and the greater Boston area was instead covered by a series of streams and rivers (Clapp 255.)

    In 1614, explorer, soldier, and entrepreneur Captain John Smith of England found his way into the Great Bay that he called “Massachusetts” and named the river that emptied into it after the reigning King Charles I. Captain Smith saw an opportunity, and with his firsthand accounts and personally drawn maps, he sought to entice his countrymen to leave their homes in England and start new lives in what would become America.
