The basketballers of the Boston Celtics wear a green jersey and the team's name is a nod to the Irish community in the city of Boston.

The "Celtics" nickname and the team's mascot "Lucky the Leprechaun" are nods to Boston's historically large Irish population, and also to the Original Celtics, a barnstorming basketball team that played in the early 20th century. [ 13]

To many in the United States, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing "Celtic" is the basketball team. But that's not the case globally. Celtic, internationally, is more widely recognized as the descriptor of Celts, which are people who speak using the Celtic language.
