How to calculate an interval To find the interval between 2 notes just find the pitch of the lowest note and start counting until you reach the top note. When counting intervals you always start from the bottom note and count both notes. E.g., to find the interval between C and G, begin on C and count up the scale until you reach G.

To find the interval, count the lines or spaces that the two notes are on as well as all the lines or spaces in between. The interval between B and D is a third. The interval between A and F is a sixth.

To identify an interval, count the number of steps on the musical scale between the two notes. The same rule applies to identifying intervals on sheet music: count the number of lines and spaces between each note, including the lines/spaces the current notes are on.
