Helmet STAR awards a star rating from 1 to 5 based on how well they protect a rider's head in a crash. Helmets rated 5 stars are exceptional in crash protection and exceed the recognised helmet standard. Helmets rated 1 star meet the crash protection required of a recognised standard. Helmets with a 5 star rating provide superior crash protection.

Virginia Tech has tested 139 bike helmets in total. In addition to the 73 helmets with 5-stars, another 37 earn 4 stars. Another 24 helmets have 3 stars and five have 2 stars. Consumers are advised to choose a 4- or 5-star helmet while also taking into account cost, fit and comfort, though any helmet is better than none.

In this rating system, a bike with a star rating of 5 is super protective. And a lid with a rating of 4 is Very Good. A rating of 3 means the helmet is Good while a rating of 2 means Adequate safety. But a rating of 1 means you’ll get marginal protection if you choose that helmet.
