    The base-ten, or decimal, system is the most common number system used today. It has 10 digits (0–9) that can be combined to write any number. The base-ten system was invented by Hindus in ancient India, and later improved by Arabs. For this reason, the digits 0–9 are called Hindu-Arabic numerals. The base-10 system was likely the most common system for ancient civilizations because humans have 10 fingers. Egyptian hieroglyphs dating back to 3000 B.C. show evidence of a decimal system. Decimal fractions first came into use in China in the 1st century B.C..
