White-Bellied Heron – This species is unique because it is incredibly rare. The IUCN lists this bird as Critically Endangered. Scientists estimate that there are no more than 250 of these birds in the wild, and possibly as few as 50 left. Habitat destruction is the primary threat to this species.

The white heron has always been rare in New Zealand. Why the kōtuku has not colonised a wider breeding ground is a mystery, but the current population is stable, although it experiences year-to-year fluctuations in breeding success.

The White-faced Heron is a medium-sized heron found in Australasia. As an accidental visitor to the United States, it is a rare sight. It has a gray body, white face, and long yellow legs.
