The Australian Road Rules require all motor bike riders and any pillion or sidecar passengers to wear an approved motor bike helmet. An “approved motor bike helmet” is a helmet made in compliance with — AS 1698; or AS/NZ 1698; or the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) standard 22.05; or

In Australia, helmets must meet either the Australian Standard or the European Standard for them to be legally used on the road. Australian Standard helmets are “certified” by a privately owned certification services company. European helmets are “homologated” by a European government.

It is now legal for retailers to sell helmets compliant to the recognised standards AS1698, UNECE 22.05, DOT, Snell and BSI. A helmet only has to be “fit for purpose” to be sold and the “purpose” may be either road use or motor sport use where helmets to other standards are allowed.
