Chronologically, the Antonine Wall post-dates the initial construction of Hadrian's Wall and was probably constructed in the early 140s CE, on the orders of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius (r. 138-161 CE), who assumed the throne upon Hadrian 's death.

The biggest, most awe-inspiring building project the people of Scotland had ever seen, the Antonine Wall stretched right across the country, from Clyde to Forth.
