Aluminum oxide is an ionic compound formed from an electrostatic bond between two aluminum atoms which have lost 3 electrons each (Al 3+) and three oxygen atoms which have gained 2 electrons each (O 2-). The strength of the ionic lattice is a function of the individual ionic charges and their radii.
