A null hypothesis (H₀) and an alternative hypothesis (Hₐ or H₁) are fundamental concepts in statistical hypothesis testing. They represent two opposing statements about a population parameter, and the goal of hypothesis testing is to determine which statement is more likely to be true based on sample data.
Null Hypothesis (H₀)
The null hypothesis suggests that there is no relationship or effect between the variables being studied. It is often the default assumption that researchers aim to disprove. For example, if a researcher hypothesizes that 55% of boys in a town are taller than girls, the null hypothesis would state that 55% of boys are not taller than girls1.
Key characteristics of the null hypothesis:
It assumes no effect or no relationship between variables.
Researchers typically try to reject or disprove it.
If accepted, researchers must revise their original assumptions.
It is denoted by H₀.
Alternative Hypothesis (Hₐ or H₁)
