Adverse possession is a legal doctrine allowing a person to claim ownership of a property if they occupy it continuously, openly, and without the owner’s permission for a specific period, usually 12 years for private property and 30 years for government land, as per the Limitation Act, 1963.

Adverse Possession means that when a trespasser or a stranger comes into possession of the land then the possession should be exclusive and it should be a continuous possession without interference for a specific period of time typically 12 to 30 successive years.
