Abdominal tenderness, or point tenderness in your abdomen, is when pressure on an area of your abdomen causes pain. It may also feel sore and tender. If the removal of pressure causes pain, that’s known as rebound tenderness or Blumberg sign. Point tenderness is often a sign that something is wrong with one or more organs in the area.

Abdominal pain may be felt anywhere between the chest and groin region of your body. The pain may be generalized, localized, or it may feel like cramps in your belly. If you have cramping or discomfort in your stomach, it may be due to gas, bloating, or constipation. Or it might be a sign of a more serious medical condition.

Abdominal pain can have many causes. The most common causes usually aren't serious, such as gas pains, indigestion or a pulled muscle. Other conditions may need urgent medical attention. The location and pattern of abdominal pain can provide important clues, but how long it lasts is especially useful when figuring out its cause.

Several conditions can cause upper stomach or upper abdominal pain, including indigestion, gas, and gastritis. Treatment typically depends on the cause, but medications and diet changes often help. Stomachaches are a common complaint.

An upper abdominal muscle strain is a common cause of upper abdominal pain. Muscle pain tends to have an achy quality. Peptic ulcer disease. Erosion by stomach acid or by a common bacterial infection can cause ulcers (sores) in your stomach and duodenum. A stomach ulcer typically causes a burning, gnawing and penetrating type of stomach pain.
